Please welcome the newest member of the family and say NO to fluffy baby portraits!

Just over nine months ago I had a great idea for a new series of photographs - there was only one flaw in my new photographic plan though - I needed a very small child as my subject. To be more precise I needed one of those tiny little nappy wearing humans we refer to as 'Babies'. As there didn't seem to be any such thing as a baby hire shop, I decided I had no choice other than to grow my own and, finally, many moons later, here she is!

Taffeta Alice Cecelia 'Photogirl' has already posed for her first shoot at the tender age of three weeks and I'll be revealing the fruits of this session very soon - but for now I just wanted to make it VERY clear that I won't be doing the usual cheesy fluff-covered vomit-inducing baby photographs expected of most photographers.

Sarahphotogirl at Scarborough's Literature Festival...

This weekend I will be exhibiting my Fairytale 'Dark Arts' series at Scarborough Library as part of the Literature festival. I'm really delighted to have been asked and I hope you all enjoy seeing the pictures as they look so much better in the flesh!

I have never really spent enough time writing my blog but then there's a big part of me that would rather be busy being creative than writing about myself so I suppose that makes sense.

Then there's Twitter. It's made my blogging world so much easier now I don't feel obliged to write a whole novel everytime. So if it's regular updates you're after, please keep an eye on my Twitter page but if you want a thesis now and then, do drop in here.. it just may be more 'then' than 'now' if you get what I mean.

An Invite to my latest Exhibition

My latest exhibition is in The Living Room and I'm inviting you all to drop by and join me for a cuppa...

Of course it's not MY Living Room. It's a fab little venue in York which does have sofas but does not have a shaun the sheep foot-rest or a tudor doll's house. I am told, however, that there will be something a little stronger than tea to drink.

All the details are above and also on my website. The exhibition runs until the 6th September, but if you want to come to the preview night on July 30th, please send me an email as it's guest list only.

See you there!

I'm the lady of the Manor! Sarahphotogirl adourns the walls of Castle Howard...

Yesterday five BRAND NEW photographs left Scarborough in the back of a rent-a-van. They were so new the camera didn't know they'd been taken yet.

I wept as the van turned the corner and headed off into the awaiting sea-fret. It was like sending your kids to school for the first time (not that I'd know as rats don't go to school) but I'm sure it felt the same much the same - tears of joy after six weeks of hard work resulting in having no life what-so-ever.

These images, part of the Her Dark Materials series are self portraits heavily influenced by fairytales and literature. They form part of the Picture Book Exhibition at Castle Howard and are displayed along side the wonderful costumes designed for me by the very talented students at Yorkshire Coast College.

This exhiition runs until September. Along side this I am soon to return to The Living Room in York. This opens to the public on Friday 31st July and around twenty images will be on dispay. If you would like to be on the guestlist for the preview night please email exhibition@sarahphotogirl.com

See you there!

What does a Witch on a Harley Davidson and a Not-so-Petis Pois have in common?

There have been some pretty strange going ons lately at Photogirl HQ. One day a witch on a Harley turns up at the studio and the next - 22 matresses and a pea the size of a car (or was that three mattresses, a petis pois and some clever post production?) Well however it happened, it certainly did happen and the fruits of all this labour will be seen for the first time Monday onwards. There's a lot of new exhibitions coming up so please check back over the next few days for a full list of where you can see my new work.

Thankyou to Gaynor, Duncan and all the lovely people at Calendar News!

I don't always blog the after-event but it just felt right to do so on this particular occasion. More as Thankyou to the people at Calendar who made my little TV appearance all the more fun.

To show my gratitude I thought I'd post a photograph I took of Calendar's presenters Gaynor and Duncan who, I have to say, were surprisingly chilled out before the show ;)

Here is a link to the tv clip itself.

Welcome to...The Circus of Horrors! Exclusive Backstage Portraits here...

A couple of weeks back (Mother's Day to be precise) I had the opportunity of spending a couple of hours in the company of The Circus of Horrors before their Fantastic show in Bridlington. While My Mum got herself a cuppa and waited for the show in a well lit area (well it was Mother's Day after all and it was certainly more inspiring than the usual box of chocolates!) I headed out along some dark, dark corridors into some dark, dark dressing rooms to find Dr Haze; the host and carnival master, and the rest of the inmates at St.Remy's Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Luckily for me I managed to escape a few hours later with an appropriately gruesome batch of photographs.

Despite being my third visit, this modern day Freakshow still amazed and entertained me with it's mixture of Music and intrigue, humour and gore - and god bless, even my Mum liked it.

I'll be putting my favourite images up on my website so keep your eyes peeled...your tongues forked and your limbs in places they really shouldn't go...

Calendar Interview is Postponed - Rescheduled for after USA shoot.

If you have already plumped the cushions, dimmed the lights and made a brew then please take note...

Due to the announcements of the axed programming, job losses and closing down of the Leeds TV Centre, tonight's interview on Calendar has been postponed - but I have been told that they will reschedule me as soon as I return from the USA :)

Right I'm off to finish packing. Don't all the girls skate around Venice Beach with only a bikini on? Right I've packed the skates... and my bikini.. (I'm sure it will feel *exactly* the same even if it is worn under jeans and a nice warm jumper..)

Stick this in your Calendar...(and be sure to tune into ITV tomorrow night at six)

My Blog is a bit like a bus... there is nothing for ages and then two come along at once! Well it's been an exciting week all in all. LA is finally booked and I am almost packed and ready. Now there is only one thing left to cram into my busy schedule and that's a live interview on Calendar news tomorrow night! Wish me luck and be sure to tune in at six o'clock ..

What do Baywatch and CSI have in common...?

...They are both filmed in LA and that is where I will be going on Thursday! Yes folks I have been commissioned to work on a film set in Downtown LA where I will be taking the film stills for a film short (which is set to become a major blockbuster film trilogy!)

I don't know much yet as it's all top secret but what I do know is that the director and producer are already responsible for some FANTASTIC films and that there are some well known household names taking the lead roles!

And the best of it? When my work is done - I'll be taking a few days off to visit venice beach et all. Hmm now were is that red swimsuit...?

OLYMPUS - The new Nikon?

After reviewing the new E3 for Digital Photo Pro magazine - Olympus called me up to ask if I would be interested in a sponsorship deal. For those who are unsure, this basically means that Olympus throw me a load of free kit and I er..just use it!

The weeks that followed started to feel freakily like Christmas the only difference being that the fat man delivering my parcels was not dressed in red and did not have a white bushy beard or unconvincing laugh.

I've used the E3 quite a lot already and I genuinely love it. OK, I'd like a few extra pixels and I'd like it to deal with noise at high ISO numbers a snippet better than it does but I tell you, apart from these two minor observations, I can genuinely say this is one of the most intuative cameras on the market. And don't even ask me about the live view screen! This has and will transform my photography. I can now see what I am actually doing on self portrait shoots and I no longer have to look like a child whose been munching on mud when I take low angle outdoor shots.

I now have an E3, E420 and the very cool MJU 1030SW. For my test reports on the E3 please see here and here and for an article on the Photogirl kitbag, go here.

SHOOTING STARS - Latest exhibition is at The Living Room in York!

My latest exhibition runs from the 28th August to the 5th October and is at The Living Room in Ye Olde York.

There will be a carefully selected collection of famous faces, plus some new unseen work from 'Her Dark Materials' collection will be making their debut. I'm shooting one of these on Wednesday in fact, so it really will be hot off the press!

The preview night will be held on Wednesday 27th August 5.30-7.30PM. As there are only limited places for this event I advise you book early. Please email preview@sarahphotogirl.co.uk if you would like to attend. Be warned - you will probably not get in on the night if you have not RSVP'd!

Signed and limited edition prints will be available to buy/order from The Living Room or direct from my website. Hope to see you there!

It's nice to be in Nice

I recently had my first commision in Nice! An old friend of mine from York moved there about 8 years ago and this is the first time I have seen him since. He is now entertainments manager at a bar called Waynes and he hired me to photograph the Festival de Musique; a one day event that takes place all over France. Obvoiusly I was only photographing the bands at Wayne's, not every band all over France (I'm not Superwoman)

My few days in Nice where some of the finest days I have ever spent - hence this blog. The photograph above is of Justin, my wonderful friend and host. I am going to post a few more images on Flickr soon so watch this space..

Sarahphotogirl Exhibition

I am about to stage my biggest exhibition to date. The photographs will appear at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire from 31st March until the 6th May so be sure to pop in if you are in the area.

Forty of my favourite images will be on display. Most of these will be from my Rock Portraits portfolio but there is some brand new stuff that hasn't even appeared on Flickr yet! I'll be posting these images over the next few weeks and there will be many more coming soon, so keep a look out.

Signed and limited edition prints are available to buy from the theatre or direct from my website.

My photos are appearing in all good book stores near you!

An A-Z of Franz Ferdinand, originally uploaded by sarahphotogirl.

This week I have discovered that I have photos in an A-Z of Franz Ferdinand and also in Paul Weller - The Changing Man! That's not a bad week for little 'ol me :)

I have only worked with Franz Ferdinand once, unlike Paul who I have worked with many, many times. He's a nice man to spend time with and, although an established and respected musician, he is much more down to earth than a lot of the bands who have just made it.
